Description of the current activities

The Institute for Hospital Organization deals with management issues in healthcare organizations, including the topics of management and strategy development, financial and target control, quality management, patient safety and, since 2019, with a focus on care research in oncology. In this context, in addition to the project on the "Evaluation of tumor boards as a key role in oncology care", the "patient perspective" is also being further established as a topic-centered approach to the further development of the healthcare system. To this end, a systematic literature review and qualitative study were conducted in 2021, and a self-assessment tool for tumor boards was developed. Publications are planned with the data collected. Through COVID-19, the need for action to ensure cancer patient care once again became more apparent. In 2021, the Institute intensified its cooperation with patient organizations and was significantly involved in the activities of the new "Alliance of Oncological Patient Organizations" (https://dieallianz.org/). The aim is to strengthen the voice of cancer patients in Austria and to work with strong partners on healthcare policy issues. A university course is being implemented for 2022 in which representatives of self-help groups are academically trained as patient advocates. Together with Allianz, the Institute is a cooperation partner of the University of Klagenfurt.
The national and international studies on patient safety have been published in renowned journals. For the first time in Austria, a valid instrument is now available to measure the degree of patient safety culture. Further projects in this context are currently in the pipeline.
The monitoring system developed in 2017 to comply with the financial and target control agreement between MedUni Vienna, Vienna General Hospital, the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and the City of Vienna leads to annual progress reports, which are prepared by the Institute together with the project partners.
